What is business travel insurance?

Similarly to personal travel insurance, business travel insurance protects employees when they're travelling overseas on behalf of their company. The policy would also cover employees for any leisure trips which do not exceed the maximum days as per the policy terms and conditions.

Our travel insurance partner - Pulse Travel

We’ve partnered with Pulse Travel, a trustworthy and experienced travel insurance company that has been supporting individuals, groups and businesses with their travel insurance needs since 1998.

What does business travel insurance cover you for?

The options will depend on who your provider is, the policy level you opt for, and whether you include any additional cover. We've listed some of the policy inclusions that you may be able to purchase below:

Business equipment

Whether it’s merchandise for a conference, company computer equipment or something else. Cover the equipment if it's lost, stolen or destroyed during your travels.

Cancellation

If you need to cancel a business trip due to unforeseen circumstances, your policy will reimburse you for some of the money lost.

Curtailment

If you need to end your trip earlier than planned due to unforeseen circumstances, you may be reimbursed the cost depending on why you curtailed the travel.

Delayed departure

When your trip is delayed for a certain period of time, you may be able to claim compensation up to the amount listed in your policy.

Delayed personal possessions

Where your personal items are delayed for longer than the period detailed in your policy, you’ll receive a payout to help cover some of the costs of purchasing new items.

Emergency medical expenses

If you have a medical emergency and need to visit the hospital, end your trip early, or extend your stay, you’ll be covered for the costs up to your policy limit.

GP 24/7 online

Access medical consultation services over the phone or via video calls to discuss any concerns you have.

Loss of passport

Receive cash towards the cost of getting a temporary passport, such as travel and accommodation expenses.

Personal liability

Cover for legal costs arising as a result of pursuing claims for compensation and damages resulting from an Insured Person’s death, illness or Bodily Injury during a trip.

Personal accident

If an accident happens that causes death, total loss of sight, limb damage or permanent disability, you may receive compensation depending on how the accident occurred.

Personal money

Should you lose or have your personal money stolen, you’ll be covered up to a maximum cash limit.

Personal possessions

If your personal belongings are lost, stolen or damaged, your policy will reimburse you up to the policy limit.

Missed departure

If you miss your flight due to issues with public transport or vehicle emergencies, you may receive a payout towards some of the costs you’ll incur as a result.

Sports equipment

If sporting equipment is being taken for the business trip, such as for company golf sessions, your policy will cover the items for loss, damage or theft.

Company money

Should an employee holding company money lose the cash or have it stolen, you’ll be reimbursed up to a cash limit.

Please note: the finer details of each cover option may vary per provider, and the above is used only to indicate what may be available to you.

What isn’t covered under business travel insurance?

Some exclusions will apply to your policy, and what these are depend on who your provider is and the type of policy you purchase. However, we’ve listed some common exclusions that you may not be able to find cover for:

High-risk sports and leisure activities, such as kite surfing and rugby.
Items, such as equipment, luggage or cash that's left unattended.
Reckless behaviour that leads to a claim being made on the policy.
Employees who are travelling to high-risk destinations.

What happens when you need to make a claim?

In the unfortunate event that you need to claim on your policy, you and your employees must understand the process. Each provider will have its own unique claims process, and they’ll be able to support you should something happen, but as an example, here’s what you may have to do:

01

Contact the local authorities

If your claim involves crime of any nature, such as having something stolen, or an accident leading to injury, you may need to contact the local authorities first. You may need to provide evidence during this stage that supports your claim at a later date.

02

Contact the insurance company

Make sure that your business travel insurance provider knows about the claim at the earliest possible date. They’ll be able to guide you on the steps you need to take next, such as what evidence to gather.

03

Provide evidence to support the claim

This may be police reports, medical information, receipts and anything else that helps to validate your claim. Depending on what the claim is for, you’ll need to gather different information, but your provider will guide you through this.

04

Receive the payout

Following a successful claim, the insurer will pay out a cash sum depending on your limits and the reason for the claim.

How much does business travel insurance cost?
